Gelato in Newfoundland: Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe

I am sure that everyone is now familiar with the amazing Newfoundland Chocolate Company – especially since the launch of their much-loved NL Saying Chocolate Bars. Recently, they have undergone a great expansion in the downtown core. The Newfoundland Chocolate Company has opened a Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe in the Visitor’s Centre on Signal Hill.

As you enter the Visitor’s Centre, you are immediately greeted with smiles from the friendly staff of the Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe and the smell of amazing foods cooking. To your left is the seating area which is adorned with fun and light-hearted decor all centred around Newfoundland culture and chocolate.

To your right, as you enter, you will find the Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe menu and the display case of their mouth-watering treats.

Of course, their menu will vary quite frequently so you will want to check for updates on their Facebook page for new menu additions.

At the Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe they serve an assortment of delicious goodies to treat yourself with, such as their infamous artisan chocolate, delicious biscotti, adorable cupcakes and amazing variations of fudge, cookies and cakes – all with a chocolate twist.

However, they not only are serving these chocolate treats, they are also serving up fresh foods! Their menu includes a selection of Grilled Panini’s and a Spicy Chicken Mole Taco –  again, with a chocolate twist! The majority of their fresh food options have chocolate features such as the Chocolate Glazed Ham Panini and the Cocoa Pulled Pork.

No doubt this menu idea seems a little different, but if there’s anyone I trust with my chocolate, it’s the Newfoundland Chocolate Company.

I, myself, tried the Spicy Chicken Mole Taco and have to say it was absolutely delicious! It was incredibly fresh, tasty and absolutely satiating.

Friends which I visited the Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe with, opted for the Mozzarella Cocoa Pesto Panini. One of these friends is Vegetarian and inquired about potential Vegetarian options, which the staff of Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe were totally eager to do and created an amazing meal for her effortlessly.

Both agreed that their Panini’s were absolutely delicious!

Although the food here was satisfying, there was something else at the Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe that I was far more eager to try – Gelato!

While backpacking in Italy I fell madly in love with the smooth and rich flavours of gelato. Gazing into the display cases featuring rows and rows of freshly made gelato was bitter-sweet, as I knew when I returned home to Newfoundland, there would be no more gelato to be had.

That is, until last Friday when the Newfoundland Chocolate Company opened their Newfoundland Chocolate Cafe!

Here they are serving fresh Gelato featuring flavours with a Newfoundland twist, including: Newfoundland Wildberry, Labrador Bakeapple and Sea Salt Caramel made with Trinity bay sea salt.

I opted for one scoop of Blueberry and one scoop of Sea Salt Caramel. Then, in the mindset of indulgence, I thought it would be nice to top off my treat with a piece of White Chocolate and Blueberry Biscotti Crumble Fudge!

Just as I remembered the fresh local gelato of Italy, the flavours were rich, smooth and endlessly satisfying.

I was very pleased with my first Newfoundland gelato experience and am very eager to return and try the rest of these Newfoundland-themed flavours.

Thank you, Newfoundland Chocolate Company, for continuing to be such a genuinely interesting and delicious enjoyment!

I highly recommend taking the time to check this place out. Grab a treat, sit out and enjoy the view – and definitely try the gelato!

Of course, if you can’t make it to Signal Hill, the Duckworth Street location of Newfoundland Chocolate Company now has gelato too! I can’t wait to grab a scoop and head for a sunny stroll downtown.
